Review | Gospel Identity: Discovering Who You Really Are

Full disclosure: I am a huge fan of New Growth Press, the official publisher of Serge (formerly World Harvest Mission). In fact, I trust few publishers more for practical, gospel-driven small group and study resources. When I get a hold of a resource from them, it is with a very biased excitement. All of that to say, no apologies!

Divided into 10 sessions, Gospel Identity: Discovering Who You Really Are begins with the “bad news” of our sin and guilt before God. It notes our “well-developed capacity for self-justification” (p. 9).  The study then compares our unsatisfying attempts at self-justification with the true and all-satisfying justification offered by God in Jesus. In so doing, it introduces the gospel and its key facets, as well as their associated benefits in the lives and relationships of disciples of Jesus.

This latter aspect is one of the strongest strengths of New Growth Press materials. They are, pardon the big word, very existential in orientation. They do not approach theology as an intellectual abstraction. They approach it as “dirt under your fingernails” practical truth.

Want to explore why you’re really so “short” with your children? Want to know the deeper reason you hide the last piece of dessert from your own spouse? Want to know why you’re lusting after your co-worker? Want to know why you drink too much or eat too much or even clean too much? Want to explore all of the twisted lies you tell to yourself, your God, and others to protect your reputation - and why your reputation is so important to you?

This book is a guided tour of the Alice-in-Wonderland-rabbit-hole-of-the-human-heart. It will diagnose without despair. It won't merely reveal great need; it will reveal and rejoice in the greater Savior.

If you’re looking for an engaging and practical study to work through alone or in a group, this is a great option. You can then follow it up with its sequels: Gospel Growth and Gospel Love.
